Learn How to Paint a Butterfly Rock Using Stencils

Hi and thank you for being here today!

If you have ever wanted to paint a rock similar to the butterfly rock pictured below, then this is where you can learn how!

Very simply, the rock above that I painted was created using stencils and a few other inexpensive supplies.

There are many different methods you can employ to create rock paintings like the one above, using stencils is just one of the easiest ways to transfer an outline onto another surface.

Over the years I have been painting rocks and selling them on line, many people have looked at my work and offered their compliments and expressions of wonder as to how I do it.  When I tell them that they can do it too, I often hear "Oh, but I'm not artistic or creative".

To this comment, I usually tell them that I believe that everyone is creative.  I am one of those people (lol!) that believes we create our reality and therefore, every one of us is creative even if we don't think of ourselves in that way.

Being artistic is another story though.  Not everyone feels they are, or could be, artistic if they tried.  However, I do think if you have a desire to learn something new, you can!

There are so many stencils available that can guide you in the craft of painting on rocks.  I personally like to paint flowers, fairies, butterflies, ladybugs, and hummingbirds too just to name a few, lol!

The sky is the limit as to what you can paint on rocks with the use of stencils.

So if you would like to paint a rock and think to yourself 'But I can't paint' or 'I'm not an artistic person' don't be that quick to dismiss this wonderful craft because stencils offer a great way to get a base image onto a rock.

I'm not a beginner, and I still use stencils because, well, they simply rock!

Here are links to some of the many flower stencils you can purchase on Amazon...

If you would like to learn to paint a rock similar to the butterfly rock pictured at the top of this page, please follow the directions below...

___________________________________________________________

DIRECTIONS:

1.  Gather supplies (see SUPPLIES list below)

2.  Paint the surface of the rock with white acrylic paint at least two times and allow it to dry completely before moving to the next step.

3.   Place your stencil onto the surface of your rock and using a stencil brush and the acrylic paint color you have chosen, stencil the image onto the rock.  If you watch the video below it will give you a general idea of how to stencil...

How to Stencil Flowers onto a Rock

4.  You may want to outline your flowers and butterfly with permanent ink Sharpie Ultra Fine Black marker.

5.  Using a thin paint brush and Mod Podge, go over the painted parts of the flowers and butterflies trying to avoid the Sharpie outlines as the black ink might smear onto the colored paints.  Let the Mod Podged areas dry completely.

6.  Now go over the whole surface of the painting with Mod Podge and if the black ink smears it will easily be wiped off of the images that have already been protected by the Mod Podge.

5.  After all the Mod Podge dries, spray rock with Acrylic sealer in a well ventilated area.

6.  Enjoy your beautiful rock painting!  You could also give it to someone as a gift or sell it on sites like Etsy or eBay.
